Think and Grow Rich

I really enjoyed reading the first chapter of thie book as the author instantly starts with one of the most powerful suggestions, “Thoughts are things”.

The author says,

“TRULY, thoughts are things and powerful things, at that, when they are mixed with DEFINITENESS OF PURPOSE, PERSISTENCE, and a BURNING DESIRE for their translation into riches, or.other material objects.”

That is something I personally have heard on almost every motivational/self-development video I have seen. Moreover, personally this formula has transformed multiple aspects of my life, from wealth, to health and family life.

This chapter presents a short story of a man named Barnes, who had BURNING DESIRE to become a business associate of Thomas Edison.

He did not know Mr. Edison. Still, he went to Mr. Edison and announced that he wants to go into business with him. Mr. Edison did see something in him (his deep DESIRE) and gave him an opportunity.

A thing to note here is that Barnes did not become Thomas Edison’s partner right away. He started from a minimal wage job under Mr. Edison, that was not important to the inventor, but most important to Barnes.

Barnes did not say to himself, “What’s the use of this job? I guess I will try for a salesman job somewhere else”. He was DETERMINED to achieve his DEFINITE PURPOSE of doing business with Edison, even if it took remainder of his life.

His DETERMINATION pays off when one day, an opportunity presents itself in an unexpected way and Barnes was still determined enough for his goal of becoming a partner with Edison that he does not let the opportunity slip.

Barnes sells a machine Mr. Edison invented, so successfully, that he gets a contract to distribute and market it all over the nation, which lead to a slogan “Made by Edison and installed by Barnes”.

What a story of DETERMINATION and BURNING DESIRE!
